Flood & Storm Relief Program

Rations that arrive by boat, hygiene kits, and volunteers who stay to clean the houses.

December 2024 brought torrential rain to Sri Lanka, leaving the Batticaloa district submerged and families stranded. Volunteers made a three-hour boat journey through the floodwater to deliver 1,500 kilograms of dry rations to 150 families — 600 people in all. ACT Sri Lanka has since kept disaster relief as a standing capability.

In October 2024 floods submerged villages across Bosnia and Herzegovina. ACT BiH volunteers reached Kiseljak, the village of Luke and the Institution for Social and Health Care in Bakovići with 1,337.90 kilograms of food, 186 kilograms of hygiene products and cleaning tools — and then stayed to help clean the houses. In 2025 volunteers in Sarajevo and Prijedor again helped flood-affected families return to safe homes.

In May 2024 torrential rain turned Rio Grande do Sul into floodplains. ACT Global, ACT USA and Mohanji Foundation Brazil were among the first to respond, dispatching hygiene essentials with the Federal University of Santa Catarina and carrying thirty packages of vegan food and hygiene products and twenty baby care packages to Lajeado in the River Taquari Valley. Brazil’s floods are not new to ACT: the Yawanawa people of Acre lost their crops to heavy flooding two years running, and ACT Brazil, funded by the USA team, supported them each time — 422 kilograms of food in April 2022 alone.

The same year, hurricanes battered communities in the United States and the Mohanji Centre of Benevolence – USA, near the affected areas, became a hub for relief: flashlights, headlamps, toiletries, bottled water, trash bags and protein bars, with plans made to support animal farms hit by the storm. In South Africa a tornado tore through northern Durban, with Tongaat worst hit and eleven lives lost; volunteers came with hygiene items, grocery hampers and cooked meals, and sat with the grieving families. Two years earlier the KwaZulu-Natal floods had brought the team out across Tongaat, Gledhow, Frasers, Umkomass, Stanger, Nonoti and Phoenix with tonnes of food and relief material. ACT UK has also funded flood relief further afield, in Kenya and Bangladesh.
