What ACT is about

ACT stands for uniting humanity with humanity.

ACT is about moving beyond division through compassion, service and conscious action.

Founded by Mohanji, ACT is a global movement powered by volunteers in over 25 countries, creating positive change through simple acts of kindness and service.

It begins with one person choosing to do one thing, on one day.

One act can inspire another, connecting people and communities through a shared intention to make a difference.

ACT is free and open to everyone.

Mind divides, consciousness unites.

ACT turns compassion into simple, practical action.

A volunteer in an orange ACT Foundation shirt spoons food onto a plate held by a boy in a yellow knitted hat, with a line of children in bright hats waiting behind him.

Food beyond species

Hunger is a universal feeling, and ACT responds with care for all living beings, offering plant-based meals to people and food to animals. Because compassion should not be limited by species.

An ACT Foundation volunteer holds a sleeping baby and talks with a young woman in a wheelchair, both in orange ACT shirts, at a home for abandoned babies in South Africa.

One positive ACT a day

Change does not always begin with something big. It can begin with one person choosing to do one good thing, on one day. Small acts, repeated and shared, can grow into meaningful change.

How ACT grew

Small steps, since 2003.

  1. 9 November 2003

    A trust in India

Mohanji establishes a charitable trust in India, named in honour of his daughter Ammu. In the same year, charitable acts began in the Middle East signaling a step towards global activity.

  2. 2012

    ACT goes truly global

ACT establishes an international presence across Africa and Europe.

  3. 2013

    A growing global family

Teams in the USA and Serbia join the growing international network.

  4. 11 May 2020

    ACT4Hunger opens

ACT, Ammucare and Mohanji Foundation launch a shared food platform during the pandemic.

  5. 2021 onward

    More local teams take root

As ACT grows, teams establish local structures in more countries, supporting the work within their own communities.

  6. 2022

    ACT4Animals and ACT4Ukraine

ACT4Animals launches as a dedicated platform for animal welfare. ACT4Ukraine becomes ACT’s first large-scale international disaster relief response, delivering essential aid to people and animals affected by the war.

  7. 9 November 2022

    ACT4Vision

Sri Lanka and the UK launch cataract surgery support. Within two months, 143 people regain their sight.

  8. 2023

    20 years, and school meals

ACT marks 20 years, and Sri Lanka starts serving school lunches.

  9. 2024

A global home in the UK

ACT establishes its international headquarters in the UK, forms an international council, and starts school meals in Nepal.

  10. 2025

A global summit, and a first signature programme

More than 170 people join ACT’s first global summit. With new school meal initiatives in Mexico, the programme grows into a signature initiative of ACT International.

ACT stories

Where compassion becomes action.

  • Members of the Arhuaco community in white traditional dress stand with an ACT volunteer behind sacks of food and skeins of yarn laid out on banana leaves, in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia.

    Guardians of Mother Earth

For the Arhuaco community in the Sierra Nevada, getting food is not simple. Supplies travel by truck, then for hours by mule, across difficult terrain to reach communities far from regular food supplies. When the food finally arrives, it means more than a meal, it means support where access is difficult.

    No child left behind

Christmas was planned for 300 children. More than 600 came. Every child was fed and received a gift.

    For the tiniest heroes

A volunteer saw the conditions in Serbia’s only unit for premature babies and started a campaign. By August, €5,200 worth of monitoring equipment had reached the ward.

Where the name comes from

Ammu

The child ACT is named for

Ammu was Mohanji's daughter. She left the world on 23 August 2000, aged four. Three years later her father registered a charitable trust in her name.

Every 23 August, teams around the world mark her day with a kind act, from feeding animals to giving blood. On 9 November, the day the trust was registered, they celebrate ACT Day.

ACT Foundation's mark — a drawn portrait of Ammu, smiling, ringed with the words love, empowerment and non-violence.
Humankind to kind humans

Compassion begins with each of us.

Every act makes a difference.
