Launched March 2023. About 1,750 hot meals a week, cooked on site by local women paid for the work.
Programme launch: March 2023.
Location: the Mannar, Nuwara Eliya and Vavuniya districts — Wellington Tamil Vidyalayam in Nuwara Eliya, Sinnadamban Barathy Vidyalayam in Vavuniya, and Kaddiyadampan Roman Catholic Tamil School in Mannar.
This is ACT’s most established School Meal Program implementation: approximately 1,750 hot, plant-based meals each week, served five days a week. The meals are prepared on site by local women, most of them mothers, employed on a contract basis — so the money buys nutrition and household income in the same village. Daily operations are overseen by the school principals, who send regular updates.
ACT has since received proposals to extend the programme to two more schools in the region.
150,688 meals served
Incidents of children fainting during morning physical education reduced to nearly zero
School attendance increased to 75%
