Public Health Emergency Response
Oxygen, food and supplies during the pandemic and South Africa's 2021 unrest.
During the pandemic ACT teams supplied what hospitals and households could not get. Through the Breathe India and Stand with Bharat campaigns, teams in the USA, UK and Qatar delivered more than twelve oxygen concentrator units to a Covid relief hospital in Chennai. In South Africa the ACT for Life Oxygen Campaign gave oxygen machines free to families who needed them, alongside Covid awareness and screening in Kwamashu, Bottlebrush, Pinetown, Inanda, Phoenix, Empangeni, Ulundi and Pietermaritzburg. In London the team donated 1,050 kilograms of food and toiletries to NHS staff at Hillingdon hospital during lockdown.
In July and August 2021, riots and looting cut communities in South Africa off from basic food supplies. Under the Stand with South Africa campaign, ACT Foundation South Africa delivered 1,025 food hampers to the most rural areas, each holding 18 kilograms of food plus toiletries — enough to sustain a family of five for just over a month. Priority went to those who could not reach a grocery shop at all, to areas cut off from supplies, and to child-headed and granny-headed households.
